The Open Network (TON) is a Layer 1 blockchain that originated from Telegram’s research and was handed over to an independent community in 2021. It operates on a Proof‑of‑Stake consensus with dynamic sharding, enabling high throughput and low fees. TON’s ecosystem includes its native token Toncoin, a suite of decentralized applications, and tight integration with the Telegram messenger.

TL;DR – TON is a community‑run, high‑performance blockchain that combines Proof‑of‑Stake, sharding, and native Telegram integration. It powers a growing catalog of dApps, wallets, and services while aiming to make decentralized finance accessible to a broad audience.

History and Governance#

The concept of TON was announced by Telegram in 2017, with the goal of creating a scalable blockchain capable of mass adoption. After regulatory disputes with the U.S. SEC, Telegram halted development in 2020 and released the source code as open‑source software. On May 29 2020, an independent community of developers, validators, and enthusiasts announced the continuation of the project.

In May 2021 the community renamed the test network to mainnet and rebranded the organization as the TON Foundation, a non‑profit entity that coordinates development and grants. On June 29 2021 Telegram transferred the ton.org domain and its GitHub organization to the community (per [[the-open-network-ton]]).

The native token Toncoin was listed on EXMO on August 9 2021 and quickly entered the top‑15 on CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko. A public performance test on October 31 2023 recorded 108,409 transactions per second. The first independent TON conference, The Gateway, took place in Dubai on November 10‑11 2023.

Architecture#

TON’s blockchain is organized into three layers:

  • Masterchain – the top‑level chain that runs the Proof‑of‑Stake consensus and finalizes all transactions.
  • Workchains – secondary chains linked to the masterchain; each can have its own configuration, virtual machine, and native token.
  • Shardchains – dynamic shards within workchains that split and merge automatically to handle load, providing the “Infinite Sharding Paradigm.”

Smart contracts execute on the TON Virtual Machine (TVM) and are written in FunC or Tact, compiled via Fift. This stack enables deterministic execution and efficient resource usage.

Ecosystem and Key Products#

TON supports a wide range of decentralized services:

  • Tonkeeper – a non‑custodial mobile wallet for Toncoin, Jettons, NFTs, and dApps.
  • TON Space – a self‑custodial wallet embedded directly in the Telegram app, lowering the barrier for Telegram users.
  • STON.fi – an AMM exchange with near‑zero fees and low slippage, integrated with TON wallets.
  • TON DNS – a domain system using the .ton zone, launched on June 30 2022, allowing human‑readable names for accounts and contracts.
  • TON Storage – a decentralized file‑storage service introduced on December 31 2022, operating on a peer‑to‑peer model.
  • TON Proxy – a network proxy layer that enables decentralized VPN‑like services; compatible with HTTP Proxy as of September 30 2022.
  • Fragment – an auction platform for Telegram usernames and anonymous numbers, accepting Toncoin for purchases, including Telegram Premium subscriptions.
  • Getgems – the leading NFT marketplace on TON, offering a low‑fee interface for creators and collectors.
  • TONup Launchpad – a fundraising and mentorship platform that helps new projects launch on TON.

As of March 19 2024, the TON App catalog listed 611 applications. The ecosystem continues to expand with new DeFi protocols, gaming titles, and infrastructure tools.

Integration with Telegram#

Although legally independent, TON maintains a technical partnership with Telegram. The TON Space wallet is accessible from the Telegram main menu, giving the network instant exposure to Telegram’s 800 million active users (per community data). Telegram’s Mini Apps platform allows developers to deploy dApps without separate installations, fueling growth in tap‑to‑earn games such as Notcoin, Hamster Kombat, and Catizen.

Community and Development Process#

TON is a community‑driven project coordinated by the TON Foundation. Development follows a peer‑review model: no release is published without review by at least three core contributors (process described in community guidelines). External security audits are performed by firms such as CertiK, Trail of Bits, Hexens, and Quantstamp. A public bug bounty program incentivizes vulnerability discovery, and a grant program funds promising ecosystem initiatives.

Prominent community figures include Anatoliy Makosov, Kirill Yemelyanenko, and Pavel Durov, who publicly supported the transition to community ownership while remaining unaffiliated with the project’s governance.
